Northern Lights over a winter wonderland

March 11 – 18, 2024

Iceland becomes a winter wonderland this time of year when the nights are over ten hours long. This workshop will focus on photographing the Aurora Borealis. During this time of limited sunlight, there is a significant opportunity to photograph the Aurora.

Join this small-group photography workshop to pursue winter landscapes and Northern Lights in an unusual part of Western Iceland. You’ll travel in a super jeep driven by a true Viking who has spent his life in Iceland. You’ll visit many incredible locations during the daylight, where swirling clouds can make the compositions even more interesting. Learn how to photograph comfortably in harsh conditions when the light is low, creating definition in the texture-rich land.

As long as the skies are clear, or even if it looks like it might be clear, you’ll be out in the dark looking for locations to line up with the fantastic dancing colors in the sky.

We will also feature our signature image reviews and Lightroom post-processing instruction as much as possible. In the field, you can expect to learn plenty: the art of seeing, making the best compositions, shooting for panoramas and HDR, proper exposure, and other technical aspects of landscape photography. And, of course, everything you need to know and understand about night photography. If you have a drone, bring it!

Are you looking to extend your time in Iceland? Join us for Iceland Ice Caves, which precedes this workshop.

March 11, 2024: Arrive at Keflavík Airport (KEF) anytime, and we’ll arrange a private ride to our hotel in Reykjavík. We’ll have a group dinner and an introductory briefing before a rest to prepare for the adventure.

March 12–15, 2024: We’ll start early and board our private super truck for our hotel on Snæfellsness Peninsula. We’ll stop to photograph along the way, including waterfalls and frozen landscapes.

We’ll explore regions around the West end of the Snæfellsness peninsula. A late sunrise gives us plenty of time to have a hearty breakfast and image review before photographing.

We’ll also explore Arnarstapi, Landrangar, and the Svortuloft lighthouse. Each night we’ll look, we’ll look for northern lights.

Before we move to the following location, we’ll photograph Kikjufell, Grandarfjordur, Hraunsfjordur, and Svöõufoss (waterfall).

March 15–17, 2024: We’ll pack up and head to another region in Northcentral Iceland around Skagafjordur. We’ll photograph Icelandic horses and the turf houses on the way.

Once in Skagafjordur, we’ll photograph incredible landscapes and seascapes such as Hvitserkur, Vatnses, and Kolugljufur. These are all great locations to be around when the northern lights appear.

March 17, 2024: Our final full day of this workshop will include another hearty breakfast and an image review. Then we’ll load our super truck and head south. You’ll photograph waterfalls Glanni and Hraunfossar, including Glacier Langjokull.

Once we reach Reykjavik, we’ll unpack one last time to enjoy our final dinner and celebrate all the fantastic experiences together.
