Dramatic ice formations in Icelandic Glaciers

March 2 – 9, 2024

This workshop will take you to the south coast of Iceland to photograph fantastic ice caves. You’ll ride in our private super jeep along with two of our photography instructors who are experienced in photographing ice caves.

Many of the caves we will visit are off the beaten path. The caves produce dramatic colors for sweeping wide-angle shots or artistic compositions of intricate ice formations. A highlight of the trip will be using a chartered helicopter to take us to a remote cave near the top of a glacier. Our group will spend about three hours here, with no others present.

We will provide you with all safety and glacier equipment. Local Icelandic glacier guides will teach you how to use the gear and become comfortable on the ice while carrying your camera equipment. You must be physically fit to hike on ice for up to 30 minutes to reach some cave entrances.

We’ll stay in small, charming hotels with excellent access to the locations we photograph.

This trip will allow you to explore unique environments while guided into rarely-seen or photographed ice caves. Your certified Icelandic glacier guides will ensure you are safe, and your two photography instructors will make sure you capture stunning images.

Plus, we’ll hold our famous image reviews to teach composition and technique. You can expect to return home with images that will wow your viewers.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

March 2, 2024: Fly into Keflavik Airport (KEF) anytime and be picked up and transported to our hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland. We’ll meet and greet over a group dinner and have a safety briefing.

March 3, 2024: We’ll head out to the south coast of Iceland in our super truck to the town of Vik. We’ll have time to explore the landscape locations around town, such as Reynisdrangar, tall spires shooting up from the Atlantic ocean several hundred feet tall. Depending on the conditions, we will visit Skógafoss, surrounded by ice.

March 4, 2024: We’ll move farther east along the south coast to the Glacier Lagoon. Our hotel is in a region with access to several ice caves. We’ll have time to visit Skaftafell, Svinafellsjokull glaciers, and the Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón.

March 5, 2024: The locals know today’s ice cave as Crystal Cave near the Vatnajokull glacier. By this time, you’ll have plenty of training with your equipment to feel comfortable walking on ice and capturing images in this very unusual landscape.

March 6, 2024: Today we’ll head out into a much lesser-known glacier to explore a more remote ice cave in the Flaajokull glacier region. There will be more logistics to reach this cave, but with the help of your guides, you will feel much more comfortable on the ice. You’ll have plenty of time to capture amazing images of these unique ice caves within the glaciers.

March 7, 2024: We’ll begin our return west along the south coast to Vik, where we’ll visit some new landscape locations and the famous “Ice Beach.” With favorable conditions, we’ll plan on visiting Vestrahorn and Stokksnes.

March 8, 2024: Today we embark on our final journey into a new and enormous ice cave that requires a super truck to access. By this time, you’ll be very comfortable working with your camera gear on ice and capable of capturing impressive images within the largest ice cave. After a great adventure, we’ll return to Reykjavik for our last night and final dinner.

March 9, 2024: Fly home anytime. You’ll be provided transportation to the airport from our hotel.

Testimonials

“This was my first photography workshop. I chose Muench for three reasons—the amount of repeat business you get, the workshop fee covers everything but airfare & alcohol, and the collection of talented instructors. Bottom line—the workshop was outstanding and I hope to attend more! ”

— Kerrin Lahr, Iceland Highlands '18

“This workshop was excellent. Randy's and Richards's leadership was top-notch. I asked for help, got it and learned a lot. I got better images as a result. ”
